Children who are hyper or over sensitive may avoid touch or do not like being touched. This effectively may reduce their socialization and indirectly reduces the communication. However, it is seen with sensory integration or play activities, that include lots of touch opportunities reduce their sensitivities and child can improve…
Few playful activities
“Dusting” most of the children can tolerate the touch if it is planned and playful in nature. Whenever there is an activity that requires a child participation, tell and explain the activity to the child. I have found dusting an effective play activity which teaches the child communication, functional activity and reduces sensitivity. It can go into level depending on the creativity but an example given below.
Samatha when approached to us, he din’t like to be touched. He gets very anxious if new person approaches him or extend his hand to shake. He did not like to even put the moisturizer or lip balm. He hates hair cut and head bath. He does not enjoy bathing under shower or avoids washing hands and legs under tap or running water. Though he avoids people touching him but he loves to feel specific textures and holds cylindrical objects like bottles etc. mother reported the child was very calm in younger age and never was clingy and always enjoyed sleeping alone and playing alone on the ground.
For him we started play activities which involves lots of planned playful activities which involved touch and variable textures.
Asking him to carry different kinds of objects with different textures and weights, later included the different temperature and vibration.
Once the child was comfortable we include the other activities like matching the different textures of same color by touching them (do not use the textures in different colors). Many times children learn them with looking at the colors then touching them.
Later was the “dusting”. We demonstrated the child to dust a doll and asked them to dust the doll. Once he understood dusting we asked them to dust the table and them the therapist. The therapist needs to give expressions of joy and tingling. Since the child had fun we asked him if he wished to do on himself. Allow him to do on himself and once he is done ask him to allow you to do on it.
Keep changing the clothes for dusting from fur to silk to wool.
It is found that after a month of regular sessions of various activities per day, the child was less anxious if people approach him. The child was more social and started standing in the line in the school. The child stopped pushing other child and can tolerate head bath and allowed washing hands under running water.
An excellent article on our online newspaper today, 31/1/2012.
